Introduction

Introduction

This work emerged from an intellectual dissonance. Upon encountering an article claiming that the Idaksahak were likely descendants of Israelite tribes that disappeared before the Christian era, I was immediately confronted with a conflict between this hypothesis and an old family memory transmitted from generation to generation. As a child, I had already consulted the genealogical tree preserved by my father — himself having received it from his own father — without at the time attributing to it any decisive historical value. Yet this tree explicitly mentions a lineage tracing back to ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib. The contradiction was too strong to be ignored.

This chapter presents the methodological framework within which this research is conducted. It clarifies my position as an author, the nature of the sources mobilized, the analytical method adopted, and the acknowledged limitations of the study. Before any historical narrative can be developed, it is necessary to establish how this history should be read and evaluated.

1. Author’s Positioning

I am both a member of the Idaksahak community and an independent researcher working on the history of my own people. This dual position entails heightened responsibility: avoiding blind adherence to tradition on the one hand, and systematic rejection of communal memory on the other.

My belonging is not invoked here as an argument from authority, but as privileged access to materials — family genealogies, transmitted narratives, linguistic and cultural practices — that remain largely absent from written archives. Conversely, my commitment to a critical approach requires that these materials be subjected to criteria of coherence, comparison, and historical contextualization.

I primarily address a cultivated general audience interested in the history of the Sahel, the Maghreb, and the margins of the Islamic world, without excluding an academic readership.

2. Genesis and Objectives of the Research

The starting point of this research is a seemingly simple question: how can the Idaksahak be presented as descendants of vanished Israelite tribes when the community’s internal memory affirms an Idrissid origin, linked to ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib?

This question was sharpened by both public and private exchanges, particularly when an Idaksahak leader was asked, in a deliberately leading manner, about a supposed Israelite origin — a question he chose not to address publicly. It was also nourished by internal oral accounts describing an ancient Moroccan origin and a major political role played by our ancestors, narratives widely known but rarely articulated in detail.

The aim of this work is neither to produce a founding myth nor to impose absolute certainty, but to determine which historical hypothesis displays the highest degree of coherence in light of the available sources.

3. General Methodological Principles

History, especially when dealing with peripheral or marginalized societies, does not rely exclusively on continuous written sources. It is constructed from a convergence of clues: texts, oral traditions, linguistics, anthropology, geography, demography, and contextual coherence.

The absence or scarcity of written sources during certain periods — particularly after the fall of the Idrissid dynasty — does not in itself constitute proof of non-existence, but rather a historically documented phenomenon in contexts of political persecution, dispersion, and clandestine survival.

Accordingly, this work adopts a cumulative and comparative approach: no source is considered self-sufficient; each is evaluated according to its compatibility with the whole.

4. Status and Use of the Genealogical Tree

The family genealogical tree constitutes the starting point of the research, but not its conclusion. It is used as an initial guide, carrying a structured memory, rather than as a dogmatic truth.

Its internal coherence was first examined, then compared with other genealogical trees held by different members of the Idaksahak community. The convergence of these independent lineages constitutes a first indicator of memorial stability.

From there, the analysis proceeds through historical descent: ancient and well-documented figures — beginning with ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib — serve as public and verifiable anchors. As one moves closer to periods of dispersion, written documentation becomes increasingly scarce, a phenomenon interpreted as historically logical rather than suspicious.

5. Sources Mobilized

The sources used in this work fall into several complementary categories:

  • Medieval written sources: notably the works of Ibn Khaldūn and other Arab chroniclers, used to establish the general historical framework and political dynamics.
  • Internal oral traditions: Idaksahak narratives transmitted across generations, compared in order to identify constants and exclude late variations.
  • External accounts: traditions reported by neighboring groups (Tuareg and other Saharan populations), analyzed critically.
  • Linguistics and anthropology: study of the Tadaksahak language, cultural practices, and social structures.
  • Contemporary biological data: available DNA test results, used as indicators of coherence, never as isolated proof.

6. Methodological Refutation of Competing Hypotheses

Hypotheses attributing an ancient Israelite origin to the Idaksahak are evaluated according to the same criteria as the Idrissid hypothesis. However, they rest on neither a continuous genealogy, nor identifiable written sources, nor linguistic, cultural, or religious coherence.

These hypotheses thus appear as exogenous constructions, often projected onto Islamized Saharan populations without solid documentary grounding. Their rejection does not stem from identity attachment, but from a critical assessment of their methodological weakness.

7. Epistemological Position and Limitations

This work does not claim to achieve absolute certainty. It advances a historically plausible thesis, grounded in a coherent alignment of heterogeneous sources. It acknowledges areas of uncertainty, documentary silences, and the inherent limits of any study dealing with periods of concealment and dispersion.

Any critique is welcome provided it operates within the same methodological framework, mobilizes comparable sources, and respects the basic principles of historical research.

This chapter thus establishes the interpretive framework necessary for the historical developments that follow. It sets out the rules of analysis and the criteria by which the history of the Idaksahak will be examined.

English

The Idaksahak are a fascinating ethnic group whose origins date back several centuries in the Sahel region. Traditionally nomadic, they have settled mainly in the border regions between Mali, Niger, and Algeria.

The history of the Idaksahak is closely linked to that of the great Sahelian empires that dominated West Africa. Their unique culture is the result of a mixture of Berber, Tuareg, and Songhai influences, creating a distinct identity that has withstood the test of time.

Oral histories passed down through generations tell how the first Idaksahak were respected scholars and traders, often serving as intermediaries between different desert communities. Their knowledge of caravan routes and mastery of several languages made them essential actors in trans-Saharan trade.

Traditional Idaksahak society is organized around family clans, each with its own traditions and specialties. Despite the challenges posed by colonization and modernization, the Idaksahak have preserved much of their unique cultural heritage.

Introduction

Conclusion

English

Introduction

In accordance with the methodological framework established in the previous chapter, this chapter provides a concise and rigorous overview of historical facts widely recognized by Islamic historiography. The purpose here is not to argue a specific thesis, but to establish a common factual foundation from which subsequent genealogical dynamics can be examined without anachronism or projection.

The approach adopted is deliberately chronological and descending: starting from universally acknowledged figures, then following the political and social dynamics that led to the dispersion of certain lineages, particularly after the fall of the Idrissid dynasty.

I. ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib: Founding Figure and Continuity of Nasab

ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib holds a central and uncontested place in Islamic history. Cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muḥammad, he is recognized as the fourth caliph in Sunni tradition and as the first imam in Shiite tradition. Beyond doctrinal differences, his historical and familial importance is undisputed (Britannica – Ali ibn Abi Talib).

ʿAlī’s descendants, primarily through his sons al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn, constitute a clearly identified and extensively documented nasab. In medieval Islamic societies, this lineage was not merely symbolic: it structured social identities, political legitimacy, and recognized family continuities (Encyclopaedia of Islam, 2nd ed., Brill).

It is important at this stage to distinguish spiritual authority, political power, and genealogical transmission. The loss or absence of power does not imply the extinction of a lineage.

II. From ʿAlī’s Descendants to the Formation of the Idrissid Dynasty

At the end of the 8th century, Idrīs ibn ʿAbd Allāh, a descendant of ʿAlī through al-Ḥasan, fled the Abbasid political context marked by repression of the Alid lineages (Britannica – Idris I). This flight to the Maghreb was neither marginal nor anecdotal: it occurred within a well-documented dynamic of political persecution and exile.

Idrīs’s settlement in the Maghreb and the founding of the Idrissid state constitute a historically solidly attested fact. The Idrissid dynasty is recognized as one of the first Islamic states in the Maghreb, playing a structuring role in the Islamization and political organization of the region (Rawd al-Qirtas, Encyclopédie berbère – Idrissids).

Medieval Arabic sources clearly describe this lineage and establishment, confirming the existence of an Idrissid branch derived from the Alid nasab and integrated durably into the Maghrebian landscape.

III. Idrissid Power, Rivalries, and Political Fragility

From its inception, Idrissid power faced multiple rivalries: Abbasid pressures, local competitions, and internal tensions. The assassination of Idrīs I illustrates the political fragility of a dynasty whose genealogical legitimacy elicited both adherence and hostility (Britannica – Idris II).

Over generations, Idrissid territory fragmented. Family branches multiplied, central power weakened, and the capacity to maintain continuous archives diminished. This process is neither exceptional nor unique to the Idrissids: it corresponds to a classic pattern of dynastic decline.

IV. Fall of the Idrissids and Historical Logic of Dispersion

The gradual fall of the Idrissid dynasty led to a loss of political and documentary visibility. The descendants did not disappear; rather, they dispersed.

This dispersion followed well-documented survival strategies: avoiding persecution, moving away from hostile power centers, and integrating into spaces where relative anonymity protected the lineages (Al-Qantara Journal – Idrissids and the Sahara).

The absence of continuous written sources from this period should therefore be understood as an expected historical effect, not as an anomaly.

V. Peripheral Maghreb, Saharan, and Sahelian Zones as Refuges

The peripheral Maghreb, Sahara, and Sahel historically served as refuge zones for groups disconnected from centers of power. Far from being historical voids, these spaces were areas of circulation, transmission, and social recomposition (Encyclopédie berbère – Sharifian Dynasties).

Numerous lineages, scholarly or Sharifian, were maintained there on the margins of official state chronicles. Geographic marginality did not imply total isolation or rupture of historical continuity.

VI. Invisible Continuity and Family Memory

The disappearance of central archives does not signify the disappearance of lineages. In contexts of dispersion, transmission primarily occurs through family memory, internal genealogies, and structured oral traditions.

This continuity, although less visible in written sources, relies on stable social mechanisms: filiation, partial endogamy, transmission of religious knowledge, and maintenance of identity markers.

Conclusion

This chapter has established a general historical framework based on widely recognized facts: the existence of an Alid nasab, the reality of the Idrissid dynasty, its fragility, and the logical dispersion of its descendants after its fall.

These elements constitute the essential foundation for the analysis to follow. The next chapter will examine the specific case of the Idaksahak and the particular ways in which they fit into this historical continuity.

(Britannica – Ali ibn Abi Talib).

(Encyclopaedia of Islam, 2nd ed., Brill).

(Rawd al-Qirtas, Encyclopédie berbère – Idrissids).

III.

(Britannica – Idris II).

(Al-Qantara Journal – Idrissids and the Sahara).

(Encyclopédie berbère – Dynasties chérifiennes).

English

The traditions and customs of the Idaksahak reflect their ingenious adaptation to the challenging Sahel environment and their rich cultural heritage. Daily life is punctuated by ancestral practices that have evolved over centuries while retaining their essence.

Craftsmanship occupies a central place in Idaksahak culture. Women excel in creating finely chiseled silver jewelry, decorated pottery, and textiles with distinctive geometric patterns. These objects are not only utilitarian but also tell the story and beliefs of the people.

Music and dance are an integral part of Idaksahak celebrations. During festivals, musicians play the tehardent (three-stringed lute) and the tindé (drum), accompanying songs that narrate the epics of ancestors or celebrate important community events.

Wedding ceremonies are particularly elaborate and can last several days. They involve negotiations between families, the exchange of symbolic gifts, and community feasts. These unions strengthen bonds between different clans and ensure social cohesion.

Oral tradition is the main vector for transmitting knowledge. Elders tell younger generations about the legends, history, and genealogy of the group, thus perpetuating collective memory. This practice is considered sacred and essential to preserving Idaksahak identity.

English

Facing the challenges of globalization and climate change, the Idaksahak are adapting while struggling to preserve their unique cultural identity. Their recent history is marked by profound transformations but also by remarkable resilience.

Since the independence of Sahelian countries, the Idaksahak have had to navigate complex political contexts. Often marginalized by central governments, they have developed strategies to make their voices heard and defend their rights. Idaksahak cultural associations and political representatives are now working toward the recognition of their heritage and the improvement of their community's living conditions.

Formal education, once foreign to their way of life, is now valued as a means of emancipation. More and more young Idaksahak are attending schools and universities while remaining attached to their roots. This dual anchoring allows them to become mediators between tradition and modernity.

Climate change and the increasing desertification of the Sahel have profoundly affected traditional livelihoods. Nomadic herding, an ancestral economic pillar, is becoming increasingly difficult to practice. In response, many Idaksahak have turned to sedentary agriculture or migrated to urban centers in search of new opportunities.

Despite these upheavals, Idaksahak culture is experiencing a remarkable revival. Festivals celebrating their heritage attract international attention, while contemporary artists draw on their traditions to create works that resonate well beyond their community. The internet and social media are now used to document and share their history, reaching a global audience and inspiring younger generations.

D’Idrīs I aux Idaksahak : continuité, dispersion et identité

Illustration : D’Idrīs I aux Idaksahak : continuité, dispersion et identité

Français

Introduction — Pourquoi ce chapitre est crucial

I. L’État idrisside : naissance et consolidation

Idrīs I — fondateur d’un État nouveau

(UjamaaLive)

Dates clés pour Idrīs I :

  • 788–789 apr. J.-C.

Introduction — Why This Chapter Matters

I am Abdoul Jalil Ag Salah, born on December 31, 2005, in Menaka, a member of the Idaksahak community and an independent researcher of my own history. This chapter is one of the pillars of my work: it recounts, generation by generation, how our genealogy fits into the history of the Idrissides and how it continues down to our Idaksahak people today.

This narrative draws both on public and verifiable historical sources and on my family’s oral memory, transmitted from father to son over centuries. We will follow a structured descending line, enriched with dates, political contexts, strategic marriages, migrations, and cultural analyses.

I. The Idrissid State: Birth and Consolidation

Idrīs I — Founder of a New State

By the late 8th century, the Muslim world was dominated by the Abbasid Caliphate in Baghdad. Descendants of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib were under political pressure and sometimes persecuted, particularly after Shiite uprisings such as the Battle of Fakhkh (786). In this context, Idrīs ibn ʿAbd Allāh fled eastward to North Africa to protect his family and preserve his genealogical line (Wikipedia).

Arriving in the Maghreb around 788–789 CE, he settled in Volubilis (Walīlī), then the center of a powerful Berber tribe, the Awraba. There, he was recognized as an imam and founded what would later be called the Idrissid dynasty, the first organized Muslim state in Morocco independent of Baghdad’s central authority (Encyclopedia Britannica).

A decisive step for his political survival was his marriage to Kenza al‑Awrabiya, daughter of the Berber chief Ishaq ibn Mohammed of the Awraba, an alliance that anchored his local power and laid the foundation for a lineage that would endure through the centuries (UjamaaLive).

Key dates for Idrīs I:

  • 788–789 CE — Arrival in the Maghreb and recognition by the Awraba (Wikipedia)
  • 789‑791 CE — Reign as imam and expansion of Idrissid power (Encyclopedia Britannica)
  • 791 CE — Death by poisoning (probably on Abbasid orders), his son is born shortly after (Wikipedia)

Although his reign was short, he laid the foundation for a structured state outside the traditional tribal-political system, introducing a centralized administration and a governance model that would leave a lasting mark on Moroccan history (Encyclopedia Britannica).

Idrīs II — Consolidation and Influence

After Idrīs I’s death, his son Idrīs II was raised by the Awraba under the regency of the vizier Rashid. In 803 CE, he officially took power (UjamaaLive).

Under his reign, the Idrissid state truly took shape. He founded the city of Fès in 808 CE, making it the new political and religious capital, attracting Arab populations migrating from Spain and Tunisia (Encyclopedia Britannica).

He led military campaigns, repelled internal opposition, and worked to unify a large territory stretching from the Atlantic coast to the Sous region (Wikipedia).

Dates and facts:

Under Idrīs II, the dynasty not only survived but established itself as a major power in North Africa, consolidating the Idrissides’ role in the Islamization and Arabization of surrounding Berber populations (Wikipedia).

II. Dispersion and Lineage Memory after the Idrissid Apex

After the death of Idrīs II in 828 CE, political power fragmented. The dynasty remained influential, but Idrissid states split into several sometimes rival principalities (Wikipedia).

Over time, the direct power of the Idrissides as rulers eroded under pressure from emerging powers: the Umayyads of Córdoba in the west, the Fatimid Emirate in the east, and other tribal confederations in North Africa (Phersu Atlas).

Even as political control weakened, Alid genealogical memory persisted among families dispersed beyond centers of power. In these lineages, the memory of descent from the Prophet ﷺ via al‑Ḥasan → Idrīs I remained a core identity element, transmitted orally through generations.

III. My Genealogical Tree: From Politics to Oral Tradition

This section marks the transition from documented political history to genealogy as it has been preserved within my family, initially as stories and links, then as written family trees in our tradition.

Important Note: From this branch onward, the published written record becomes rare or fragmentary. It is during this period that our ancestors settled in the Sahara and Sahel, living far from political centers but preserving their genealogical memory and religious traditions.

IV. Who Are the Idaksahak: Community Context

The Idaksahak (also called Daoussahak, Dawsahaq, etc.) are today a pastoral community mainly in northeastern Mali, particularly around Ménaka, Inékar, and Talataye (Wikipedia).

Key publicly attested points:

  • They speak the Tadaksahak language, part of the Northern Songhay group, heavily influenced by neighboring Tuareg languages (Tamasheq, Tamajaq) (Wikipedia)
  • Historically, they served as marabouts and herders for some Tuareg factions, though they existed as a distinct group before the Songhai Empire (Wikipedia)
  • The name i‑dáksahak literally means “sons of Isaac” (interpretations vary but reflect an ancient nominative root) (Wikipedia)

Their long-standing presence in the Sahel, combined with oral traditions tracing their roots northward and internal genealogical links, aligns with a historical post-Idrissid migration to the Sahara, where sharifian lineages settled into new local realities (Vdoc).

V. Narrative Conclusion

This chapter establishes a continuous and coherent history starting with the Idrissid state founded by Idrīs I, showing:

  • a public genealogical line through Idrīs II,
  • a transition to dispersed branches after the 9th century,
  • family oral continuity to the Idaksahak,
  • and a linguistic and cultural context demonstrating how these lineages persisted along historical routes.

Connections between these periods, though sometimes obscure in written archives, are logical and supported by community memory, linguistic archaeology, and verifiable historical sources on the Idrissides.

(Encyclopedia Britannica).

(Encyclopedia Britannica)

(Encyclopedia Britannica).

(Encyclopedia Britannica).

(Encyclopedia Britannica)

(Phersu Atlas).

The Idaksahak language, called "Tadaksahak," is a cultural treasure that reflects the complex history and diverse influences of this people. Belonging to the Songhai language family, it has incorporated many elements from Berber and Tuareg languages, creating a unique idiom in the linguistic landscape of the Sahel.

Tadaksahak is characterized by its lexical richness, particularly in areas related to the desert environment, livestock, and social relationships. The nuances used to describe different types of sand, weather conditions, or animal behaviors testify to a deep knowledge of their environment. This language also has a sophisticated tonal system and grammar that allows for the precise expression of complex concepts.

Traditionally unwritten, the Idaksahak language has been transmitted orally for centuries. Griots, guardians of collective memory, have played a crucial role in this transmission. Masters of the art of oratory, they recite epic poems, genealogies, and tales that constitute Idaksahak oral literature.

Traditional Idaksahak narratives are divided into several categories: founding myths that explain the origin of the world and the people, historical legends that recount the great deeds of ancestors, moral tales that transmit the values of society, and proverbs that condense popular wisdom. These narratives are often accompanied by music and sometimes dances during community gatherings.

In recent decades, efforts have been made to develop a writing system adapted to Tadaksahak, primarily using the Latin alphabet with diacritical marks. Linguists, in collaboration with native speakers, are working to document this language and create educational materials. Collections of tales, poems, and proverbs have been published, thus preserving this intangible heritage for future generations.

Quand Idriss I arrive au Maghreb vers l’an 789 apr.

  1. Reconnaître la lignée d’origine du chef Awrabi qui avait offert l’alliance matrimoniale et le soutien social ;
  2. Marquer une continuité de légitimité auprès des communautés environnantes, car Ishaq était une figure respectée dans la région ;

IV. Conclusion : une identité ancrée dans l’histoire

English

When Idriss I arrived in the Maghreb around 789 CE, fleeing Abbasid persecution after the Battle of Fakhkh, he encountered in the region of Walīlī (near present-day Volubilis) an influential Berber tribe, the Awraba. It was here that a decisive moment unfolded in the formation of what would become the Idrissid dynasty and, indirectly, the genealogical memory of the Idaksahak. Idriss I married Kenza al-Awrabiya, a woman of the Awraba tribe, daughter of Ishaq ibn Mohammed ibn Hammid, the tribal chief—an alliance that consolidated his political and social establishment in northern Morocco. (Wikipedia)

This union is not a mere anecdote: it founded the Idrissid dynasty and inscribed in history a fusion of Arab (Alid) and Amazigh (Awraba) lineages. The birth, following this marriage, of Idriss II, after his father’s death, is recognized as a historical turning point—without this child, the dynasty would not have survived politically or genealogically. (Wikipedia)

This marriage must be understood within the tribal and social logic of the time. Among the Awraba and Amazigh peoples in general, alliance through marriage with a powerful family or lineage was a strategic practice: it conferred local legitimacy, protection, and lasting social anchorage upon the newcomer. The fact that Idriss I married specifically the daughter of the chief—Kenza al-Awrabiya—shows that this was not merely an alliance between individuals, but an alliance between two already established social and cultural systems. (Wikipedia)

I. The Meaning of the Name Idaksahak and Its Link to Ishaq

The name Idaksahak is a transformed form of Ida Ishaq, literally “the descendants of Ishaq” within an Amazigh linguistic structure. It is not a reference to the prophet Isaac (in pre-Christian Abrahamic traditions), nor a pronunciation error: it refers to a specific ancestor, Ishaq ibn Mohammad al-Awrabi, chief of the Awraba, who plays a central genealogical role in the formation of the post-Idrissid lineage among populations that later settled in the Sahara and the Sahel.

This designation functioned as a marker of social and political identity. Among the Amazigh and in many Saharan cultures, identifying a group through a prestigious ancestor is both an act of recognition and distinction. In this case, calling the descendants Ida Ishaq meant:

  1. Recognizing the lineage of origin of the Awraba chief who offered marital alliance and social support;
  2. Marking a continuity of legitimacy vis-à-vis surrounding communities, since Ishaq was a respected figure in the region;
  3. Differentiating this integrated lineage from other branches that did not form this specific alliance.

The phonetic transformation from Ida Ishaq to Idaksahak (and sometimes Daoussahak or Dawsahak, depending on regional pronunciation habits) is a natural consequence of prolonged linguistic contact among various Saharan languages—notably Songhay, Arabic, and Tamasheq—without altering the fundamental meaning of the name.

II. The Tadaksahak Language as Evidence of Historical Continuity

The language spoken today is not the product of chance: Tadaksahak is classified among the Northern Songhay languages, a branch of the Nilo-Saharan language family traditionally spoken in northeastern Mali, particularly around Ménaka and Gao. (UjamaaLive)

This language is not merely an isolated dialect; it is the result of a historical linguistic fusion. Tadaksahak speakers display a Songhay base while incorporating structural—phonetic and lexical—elements from Tuareg languages such as Tamasheq and Tamajaq, as well as traces of Arabic. The phenomena of calquing, borrowing, and phonetic transformation observed in Tadaksahak correspond perfectly to a history of prolonged and recurring contact among diverse Saharan populations. (UjamaaLive)

One of the most significant aspects concerns Arabic pronunciation. A contemporary Arabic speaker in the Sahel (for example, Bambara, Songhay, or Tamasheq speakers) generally encounters difficulty accurately pronouncing certain Classical Arabic sounds, particularly غ (ghayn). In local languages, this sound is often rendered as ق (qaf) or assimilated to other phonemes closer to their phonetic systems.

Among the Idaksahak, the situation is different. When dealing with words of Arabic origin—especially those related to Islam or proper names—difficult Arabic sounds (such as ح or ع) are articulated with precision, without significant alteration. This ability is not merely imitative; it reflects an ancient and continuous linguistic transmission, indicative of deep and lasting contact with an Arabized tradition initially transmitted through the Idrissid lineage.

This phonetic precision is not found in all neighboring languages of the region. Among Tamasheq or Songhay speakers, many Classical Arabic phonemes are adapted or replaced according to the phonological structures of those languages, making the original retention of these sounds among the Daoussahak particularly remarkable.

Thus, Tadaksahak is a structured, living language, historically in contact with other Saharan idioms, yet one that preserves a profound Arabophone phonetic imprint where some local communities have attenuated or modified these sounds—demonstrating a linguistic continuity consistent with a lineage tracing back to the Idrissids and the introduction of Classical Arabic through this ancient line.

III. Culture, Rites, and Memory: The Social Continuity of the Idaksahak

Language is only one aspect of a complete cultural identity. The social practices, rituals, and collective memories of the Idaksahak also testify to a history of continuity and active cultural appropriation.

In a typical Saharan or Sahelian society, family memory is expressed not only through words but through oral narratives transmitted from generation to generation: genealogies, ancestral accounts, explanations of historical events, and migration narratives. Among the Idaksahak, these narratives are organized in a structured manner, with coherent narrative sequences, including foundational marital alliances, migrations, cultural adjustments, and integrations with neighboring peoples.

Community rites—whether related to rites of passage, marriage ceremonies, or religious festivals—combine traditional Islamic elements with local socio-cultural practices. This combination is not a superficial syncretism; it reflects a composite identity, forged over centuries at the crossroads of Islam and ancient Saharan socio-cultural traditions.

IV. Conclusion: An Identity Rooted in History

Through language, pronunciation, the origin of the name, and cultural practices, it becomes clear that Idaksahak identity cannot be reduced to a simple tribal designation. It is the product of a complex yet coherent history, shaped by:

  • a recognized lineage connection to the Idrissids through Ishaq al-Awrabi and his marital alliance with Idriss I—a fact confirmed by public historical sources, notably the figure of Kenza al-Awrabiya, wife of Idriss I and mother of Idriss II. (Wikipedia)
  • a structured language, deeply marked by historical contacts among Songhay, Tuareg, and Classical Arabic, whose phonetics indicate a deep and lasting transmission, very different from the phonetic adaptations observed among other Sahelian speakers.
  • an active social and cultural memory, transmitted orally, which continually reinscribes the lineage within a shared narrative space of the community.

This chapter thus establishes that Idaksahak language and culture are not isolated or accidental phenomena, but living anthropological evidence of an identity rooted in a history that begins with the Idrissids, passes through Ishaq ibn Mohammad al-Awrabi, and extends to the present day.

(Wikipedia)

(Wikipedia)

(Wikipedia)

(UjamaaLive)

(UjamaaLive)

III.

(Wikipedia)

Introduction générale

General Introduction

At this stage of this research, it is no longer possible to treat the question of the Idaksahak as a vague hypothesis, nor as a simple identity narrative. The previous chapters established a rigorous methodological framework, followed by an objectively recognized historical foundation, extending from the Alid nasab to the Idrissid dispersal after the collapse of centralized power in the Maghreb.

This final chapter serves a different purpose. It is no longer about introducing or preparing the topic, but rather about bringing together, connecting, and demonstrating, without unnecessary emphasis, how a historically attested lineage has crossed centuries, political ruptures, geographical displacements, and cultural recompositions, ultimately giving rise to a very real, identifiable, and living community: the Idaksahak, still present today in the central Sahel.

I speak here both as a member of this community, and as an independent researcher, fully aware that personal involvement does not invalidate rigor, provided that methods are explicit, sources verifiable, and reasoning coherent.

From the Idrissid Rupture to Lineage Survival

After the death of Idrīs I (around 791), followed by the gradual weakening of the Idrissid dynasty during the 9th and 10th centuries, the situation of the direct descendants became structurally unstable. Medieval Arabic sources clearly describe this period as one of political fragmentation, marked by rivalries between the Umayyads of Córdoba, the Fatimids, and local powers.

Ibn Khaldūn, in the Kitāb al-ʿIbar, explicitly mentions the dispersion of Sharifian lineages after the fall of dynasties, describing it as a recurring phenomenon in the history of the Maghreb. He emphasizes that the loss of political power almost always results in documentary invisibility, without necessarily implying the extinction of lineages.
(Source: Ibn Khaldūn, History of the Berbers, translated by de Slane, BnF Gallica: https://gallica.bnf.fr)

It is within this precise context that the Idrissid branch relevant to this study emerges. Part of the descendants remained neither in imperial cities nor in visible centers of power but withdrew into refuge zones, particularly among allied Amazigh groups.

Ishaq ibn Muḥammad al-Awrabī and the Foundational Alliance

A fundamental point, often misunderstood or deliberately distorted, must be clarified with precision.

Ishaq ibn Muḥammad al-Awrabī was not a simple host. He was an Amazigh Awraba chief, historically attested as a local authority during the period of Idrissid establishment. His role is central because he sealed a major political and familial alliance by giving his daughter in marriage to Idrīs I.

This marriage was neither symbolic nor secondary. Within the Amazigh and Maghrebi context of the 8th century, it represented integration, protection, and mutual recognition. It established a mixed lineage, both Sharifian through paternal nasab and Amazigh through local anchoring.

The descendants resulting from this alliance were therefore not foreigners “welcomed” by the Awraba; they were their direct descendants through alliance and lineage.

From this emerges the full meaning of the designation “Ida Ishaq”:
not “those who follow Ishaq,”
but “the descendants of Ishaq,” according to a classical Amazigh lineage designation logic.

Transformation of the Name and Linguistic Logic

Over time, and particularly with geographical dispersal toward the south, the designation “Ida Ishaq” underwent natural phonetic transformations.

In an environment dominated by Songhay languages (Sorhay), with secondary Arabic and Tamasheq influence, certain Arabic consonants evolved in collective pronunciation. The ḥāʾ (ح) and the ʿayn (ع), in particular, have historically been difficult to maintain within non-Semitic linguistic systems.

This phenomenon is well documented in historical linguistics and observable throughout the Sahel. However, a distinctive element appears among the Idaksahak: the surprisingly accurate preservation of numerous Arabic phonemes, whereas neighboring groups display systematic substitutions.

This characteristic is neither accidental nor a racial myth. It can be explained by an ancient Arabized cultural continuity, transmitted within the group, combined with partial endogamy and strong valorization of religious knowledge.

Thus, “Ida Ishaq” gradually became Idashaq, then Idaksahak / Daoussahak, without ever losing its original meaning:
the descendants of Ishaq al-Awrabi.

It is essential to clarify that this Ishaq has no connection to the biblical prophet Isaac. Any attempt to assimilate the two is an anachronistic confusion without genealogical or historical foundation.

Genealogical Continuity: From ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib to Myself

What distinguishes this research from a simple oral narrative is the existence of a continuous genealogical tree, transmitted within my family, cross-checked with other independent Idaksahak genealogies, and verified through comparison with historically documented periods.

I do not claim that every intermediate name appears in official chronicles—such a claim would be historically absurd. However, I demonstrate that each documentary gap corresponds to a known political rupture, and that family continuity remains consistent with established historical facts.

The Idaksahak in the Contemporary Era (20th–21st Centuries)

Today, the Idaksahak are neither a relic nor a group frozen in the past. They are present in Mali, Niger, Algeria, and Libya. Their way of life has evolved, but certain traits remain: bilingualism or trilingualism, attachment to scholarly Islam, and structured genealogical memory.

The contemporary crises of the Sahel, including targeted violence, cannot be understood without considering this long history, often ignored by superficial analyses.

English

The art and crafts of the Idaksahak represent the material expression of their cultural identity and worldview. These creations, both utilitarian and aesthetic, testify to ancestral know-how passed down from generation to generation.

Silversmithing is one of the most emblematic arts of the Idaksahak. Craftsmen, generally men, work silver with remarkable dexterity to create sophisticated jewelry: protective pendants in the shape of the Agadez cross, massive bracelets adorned with geometric patterns, and finely chiseled earrings. These pieces are not mere ornaments; they indicate social status, tell a family story, or offer spiritual protection to the wearer.

Leatherwork constitutes another specialty of Idaksahak artisans. They make bags, sandals, camel saddles, and cases decorated with colorful patterns obtained by vegetable dyeing or by applying leather pieces of different colors. The embossing technique also allows for creating subtle reliefs that add a tactile dimension to the objects.

Basketry and weaving are mainly practiced by women. Using local plant fibers such as the doum palm, they weave mats, baskets, fans, and calabash lids with complex patterns. Weavings, meanwhile, produce blankets, tents, and clothing where colored bands alternate with symbolic motifs.

Idaksahak pottery is distinguished by its harmonious shapes and incised or painted decorations. Potters hand-shape containers for storing water, preparing food, or serving meals. Each piece is unique, bearing the personal mark of its creator while respecting traditional aesthetic canons.

These traditional arts are experiencing a revival today thanks to growing interest in ethnic crafts. Idaksahak artisan cooperatives have formed to preserve these ancestral techniques while adapting them to contemporary tastes. Their creations, exhibited in international galleries and online shops, help make this culture known beyond the borders of the Sahel and provide income for communities.

Conclusion définitive

From the Silence of Chronicles to Real Continuity

When we leave the visibly documented Idrisid period and enter the centuries following its fall, we step into what many mistakenly describe as a dark age. In reality, it is less a disappearance than a change in historical regime. History does not vanish; it simply changes its medium.

Ibn Khaldūn is very clear on this point. In his analysis of Maghrebi dynasties, he explains that the loss of power almost mechanically leads to the loss of documentary visibility, but never to the biological disappearance of lineages. Families continue to exist, reproduce, and transmit their heritage, but outside state frameworks. This observation, formulated in the 14th century, is one of the methodological pillars of this research.
(Ibn Khaldūn, Kitāb al-ʿIbar, trans. de Slane, BnF Gallica: https://gallica.bnf.fr)

The Idrisid branch that concerns us fits exactly into this pattern. It neither breaks with its nasab nor with its memory, but it ceases to be politically visible, because such visibility had become dangerous.

The Awraba Alliance as a Lasting Historical Pivot

The alliance between Idrīs I and the daughter of Ishaq ibn Muḥammad al-Awrabī must be understood not as a temporary episode, but as a structural pivot. In Amazigh societies, this type of alliance is never neutral: it engages descent, belonging, and protection over the long term.

From this alliance onward, part of the Idrisid descendants gradually ceased to be identified solely through reference to Idrīs — a reference that had become politically risky — and adopted identification through the Amazigh ancestor Ishaq. This transformation is functional, not ideological. It allowed the lineage to survive, integrate, and maintain itself within an environment that had become hostile to former dynasties.

Thus emerged, slowly but durably, the identification through Ida Ishaq, which is neither a concealment of Idrisid origin nor a denial of the Alid nasab, but rather a strategic adaptation to the historical context.

The Long Duration of Migration and Saharan Recomposition

Between the 11th and the 15th century, the lineage did not move as a compact group. It diffused. Each generation settled within a slightly different geographical space, following caravan routes, religious networks, local alliances, and survival opportunities.

This slow progression toward the Sahara and later the Sahel is consistent with what is known about human mobility during that period. Scholarly and sharifian lineages often played roles as religious, legal, or educational intermediaries, without ever forming visibly political entities.

It is within this context that an Idaksahak identity gradually stabilized, not as a sudden creation, but as the cumulative result of several centuries of recomposition.

Central Document: Chronological Genealogical and Historical Table

This table is not a simple summary. It serves as a hinge between family genealogy and publicly verifiable history.

Period Ancestor / Generation Historically Attested Event or Context
7th century ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib Universally recognized Alid nasab
8th century al-Ḥasan → ʿAbd Allāh al-Kāmil Continuity of the sharifian lineage
Late 8th c. Idrīs I Foundation of the Idrisid State in the Maghreb
Late 8th c. Ishaq ibn Muḥammad al-Awrabī Awraba leader, marital alliance with Idrīs
9th–10th c. Idrisid descendants Fragmentation, persecutions, beginning of dispersion
11th–13th c. Ida Ishaq branch Amazigh integration, political invisibilization
14th c. — Ibn Khaldūn describes the dispersion of noble lineages
15th–18th c. Saharan ancestors Stabilization within trans-Saharan networks
19th c. Pre-colonial ancestors Attested presence in the Sahelian space
20th c. Colonial period Administrative reclassification, marginalization
21st c. Salah → Abdoul Jalil ag Salah Family continuity into the contemporary period

This table demonstrates one simple but decisive reality: at no moment does the lineage leave history. It simply changes its form of visibility.

Language as a Living Archive

Tadaksahak functions here as a non-written archive. Songhai dominance, early Arabic influence, and Tamasheq contributions are not contradictory; they correspond exactly to what is expected from a group originating from an early Arabized lineage that crossed a multilingual environment over several centuries.

The ability of the Daoussahak to preserve accurate pronunciation of Arabic phonemes, while neighboring groups display systematic substitutions, constitutes a strong anthropolinguistic indicator. It does not alone prove an origin, but it confirms an overall coherence.

The Idaksahak in the Modern and Contemporary Period

In the 20th century, colonization introduced a profound administrative rupture. The Idaksahak were often confused with other groups, without consideration of their specific history. This confusion persisted after independence.

In 2026, the community still exists. It is dispersed and sometimes fragile, but it continues to exist as a real historical entity, endowed with memory, language, genealogy, and identity consciousness.

The current crises in the Sahel do not erase this history; on the contrary, they make its proper documentation more urgent.

Final Conclusion

This chapter does not aim to close a debate through authority. It patiently demonstrates that Idaksahak history is structurally coherent, historically plausible, and socially attested.

The Idrisid filiation is not a slogan. It is a continuous framework, transformed by time but never broken.

From this point onward, denying this continuity no longer falls within historical analysis, but rather within a refusal to examine facts in their full complexity.
